Former Normansfield Hospital, Teddington
This important site near the River Thames offered opportunities for residential development but was subject to an unusually broad range of constraints. The former hospital group is listed because of its historical association with Dr Langdon Down (Downs Syndrome) and the buildings include a remarkable Grade II* listed Victorian theatre. One third of the site is designated Metropolitan Open Land while further areas are of local scientific or nature interest. In addition, the site is within a conservation area.
Cunnane Town Planning worked closely with architects to devise and promote a scheme that respects the setting and character of the listed buildings and the conservation area and engaged in meetings with local residents and groups. Planning permission, listed building and conservation area consents were eventually secured for a development of 190 dwellings, hotel with a restaurant and bar, non-residential accommodation for groups working with learning disability issues and for a working theatre museum.

Update to June 2007
Cunnane Town Planning have been instructed to submit an application for 89 apartments comprising the refurbishment, conversion and extension of the former Normansfield Hospital in Teddington. We had previously secured permission for use of the building as a hotel, as part of a mixed scheme incorporating predominantly residential development, but the owners have been unable to find a hotel operator to take it on. The Grade II listed building, in a conservation area, has fallen into disrepair and residential is now the only viable use.
